Virginia Military Vehicle Association Newsletter
August 2006

It’s so good to see a news letter again. I know that being secretary and news letter editor is a lot of work. I know of the many hours that Diane Knapp put in as secretary and for the most part, it is a thankless job. Keeping the membership informed of the events, meetings and other communication is the heart of any organization. Many volunteer organizations pay a professional secretary or publisher to enhance their club communication, and do the mundane work of mailing lists, dues, reminders, events, etc. Given that we have a sponsor to pay for such an expense, I think it should be considered. During the first three months of her term, Diane showed us the kind of enhanced communications that are possible (calenders, birthdays, etc). Fortunately, we have taken many pictures, and possibly we could put together an annual publication showing just what we have done this year.

Our membership has grown significantly. We have new members from Lyndhurst and western Virginia to Portsmouth and the Eastern Shore. Given the high price of gas, and the higher cost of driving military vehicles, it’s unreasonable to expect our entire membership to attend a two hour meeting on Sunday afternoon.

We have truly become The Virginia Military Vehicle Association. We should consider ways to make our distant members’ participation more convenient and cost effective. In the June meeting, someone brought up the idea of voting by mail or proxy. Perhaps we should consider this in our upcoming election. Also, this might enable us to meet the quorum requirements required by our bylaws for amendments, and as everyone agrees, our bylaws definitely need improvement.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have time at our last meeting to finish all of the business and details that need to be determined before upcoming events at Field Days of the Past and the Tri-Club event at Jamestown. We need volunteers to move the M-20 on Thursday night or Friday morning, and back on Sunday afternoon. For our meeting in October (elections), do we want to serve food and have a party, or just come to the polls and vote?

We have nothing officially scheduled for the month of August, however, Stan and Mary are having a party/camp-out on August 26th and 27th, and the entire club is invited.

Hope to see you there!
